There are two ways to get a "thank you" out of a four-year-old. The police-state way: prompt, correct, withhold until the magic word appears. Manners are noticing, formalized

- Model receiving manners too. Thank your child specifically and often. Manners flow downhill.
- Prompt privately, praise publicly. Corrections whispered, wins broadcast. Shame teaches performance; pride teaches habit.
