Quick audit of how respect usually gets taught: "Respect your elders." "Don't talk back." Notice the shape — respect as obedience flowing upward. Kids drilled on that version often turn out perfectly polite to adults and casually dismissive of peers, younger kids, and anyone with less power. Because that's the lesson as delivered: respect is about rank.

The Voice Charter
In The Power of Quiet (Zumblies Episode 7), Zumbleton adopts a charter — ALL VOICES MATTER — after the village realizes it's been talking over Whisper, its softest member, and missing what she knew. The loud and beloved characters (Sparklo, Giggles, Dash) don't learn to obey Whisper. They learn to make room for her.
That's respect defined properly for a five-year-old: not "be quiet for the powerful" but "make room for everyone's voice — especially the ones easy to miss." It's a peer-to-peer, downward-compatible definition. It covers the shy classmate, the little sibling, the kid who's different.

The charter version of respect gives your child standing too — their voice matters, which is why interrupting them mid-sentence to demand they not interrupt reads as hypocrisy even to a four-year-old. Kids adopt values they benefit from far faster than values imposed on them. The social-emotional research community (see CASEL) frames respect within relationship skills for exactly this reason: it's mutual machinery, not etiquette.
Practicing the charter at home
- The talking object at dinner — holder speaks, everyone else makes room. Corny; works.
- Catch and name it: "You waited for your sister to finish — that's the Voice Charter."
- Honor their no's where safety allows (hugs, tickles, sharing the sacred toy). Respected boundaries teach respecting boundaries.
