Lane 1 — their books: genuinely easy decodables and early readers, matched to their actual phonics level (ask the teacher). The non-negotiable spec: near-total success. Lane 3 — your books: the read-aloud, running years above their level, untouched by the new skill. This lane carries the story-love while lanes one and two do the labor.
The sessions: short, won, and ended early
Five to ten minutes of their-books practice, ending while it still feels good — stop on a win, never on a grind. Your correction style matters enormously: when a word stalls, wait a beat, then point calmly; never sigh, never "sound it OUT" in the tone that means hurry. The child is monitoring your face for a verdict on themselves. Keep the face boring and warm.
The three first-100-days mistakes
Converting the read-aloud into a test ("you read this page") — the beloved ritual becomes a pop quiz and both assets degrade. Invite, never require. Leveling up on schedule — progress is jagged; regression weeks are normal; the level follows the child, not the calendar. Public comparison — "your sister was reading chapter books by now" does damage measured in years.
The milestone to celebrate
Not the level jump — the first self-initiated read: the cereal box, the street sign, the favorite book opened alone on the rug. That's the identity forming. Notice it out loud, once, warmly.
