There's a selection criterion for childrens books that never appears on lists and quietly outranks half of what does:ย do you, the adult, enjoy it? It sounds indulgent. It's structural โ because the 200th reading is coming, and your relationship with the book decides what those two hundred sessions feel like on the receiving end.

The transmission problem
Children read your engagement before they read anything else. A parent grinding through a hated book in a flat voice delivers, alongside the words, a nightly masterclass in reading as chore โ and kids absorb the meta-message with perfect fidelity. The reverse is equally true: your genuine laugh at the funny page, your real investment in the cliffhanger, your unforced character voices โ that's the advertisement for reading itself, running under every story. Modeling is how children acquire attitudes as much as skills, the observational-learning core that the SEL framework at CASEL builds on: kids don't adopt what adults recommend; they adopt what adults visibly are. Be a person who enjoys the book.
What adult-durable childrens books have
Four features predict 200th-reading survival. Prose with music: rhythm that feels good in the mouth at half speed โ test any candidate by reading a middle page aloud in the store. The over-the-head layer: a joke, an irony, or an observation pitched at the adult ("packed forty pairs of socks and forgot his toothbrush" lands differently on the person who does the packing). Characters with real interiors: flat characters exhaust; ones with genuine inner weather โ the perfectionist you recognize from your own mirror, the masker hiding sadness to protect his friends โ stay interesting because they're true. Emotional beats that still land: the adult-durable book is the one that gets you a little, even on reading forty. If the goodbye chapter still tightens your throat, it earned the shelf.
The permission slip
So take the criterion seriously at the register: between two comparable books, buy the one you like. Steer the library haul toward material you can perform with pleasure. And when a child's beloved pick is genuinely unbearable, run the two-slot system โ their pick, then yours โ rather than martyring yourself nightly. Your reading joy isn't self-indulgence. It's curriculum.
