Every teacher knows the read-aloud arm cramp: hold the book, rotate it slowly across twenty-two sightlines, repeat per page, lose the back row anyway. Here's the ten-minute upgrade — and no, it doesn't turn story time into screen time in any way that matters.
The setup
Tablet or laptop → your projector or classroom display → ebook open. That's the whole stack. Now every child sees every illustration at poster size, simultaneously. The back row exists again. You face the class instead of the book. Expressive illustration details — the exact anger on Sparklo's face, the tiny worried Dash — become teachable at distance, which matters enormously for the emotion-vocabulary work picture books do best.
Read-aloud technique, upgraded
- Freeze-frame questioning. Park on a page: "Just from this picture — how does everyone feel? How do you know?" Whole-class inference practice, no squinting.
- Zoom. Pinch into a background detail ("what is Whisper holding?") — an attention-reset button paper can't press.
- Dialogic reading still rules. The device changes the display, not the pedagogy: predict, question, connect, retell. The evidence base for interactive read-alouds (well summarized at Reading Rockets) applies identically.
The curriculum bonus
