Grandma's Cheat Sheet: Bedtime for a 4-Year-Old (Babysitter Edition)

To every grandparent, aunt, uncle, and brave family friend on duty tonight: small children are ruthless auditors of routine, and you are a substitute teacher. They will test whether the rules travel. This run-sheet is how you pass.

The run-sheet (T-minus 45 minutes)

T-45 β€” Wind-down begins. Big lights down, loud toys away, screens off now (not at bed β€” the gap matters). Announce the sequence: "Pajamas, teeth, then story time." Kids comply with sequences far better than with orders; the pediatric sleep guidance at HealthyChildren.org is built on exactly this predictability principle.

T-30 β€” Pajamas & teeth, narrated as countdown, not negotiation. "Two things left before the story!" The story is the carrot; use it shamelessly.

T-15 β€” Story protocol. Ask the parents' opening phrase in advance (many families have one β€” use it verbatim; it's a passcode). Offer the choice from the usual menu: "Which episode tonight?" Do the voices. Yes, all of them. Your Giggles will be reviewed.

T-5 β€” The landing. Last page: half speed, half volume. Closing line, lights out, brief warm exit. Do not linger β€” lingering reads as negotiability.

The three traps

  1. "One more story" without a number. Get the house rule from the parents (one? two?) and hold it like law. The first test comes tonight; pass it and the night is yours.
  2. The special-occasion sugar/screen bump at T-60. You will pay for it at T-0 with interest.
  3. Improvising a new book. Novelty is stimulation. The comfort episode they've heard forty times is your ally, not a boring choice.

The grandparent power move

If the family reads a series, know a character or two before you arrive. Walking in already fluent in "Dash" and "garden speed" grants instant insider status β€” and if you're far away most of the year, the same ebooks on your own tablet make you a video-call bedtime regular, not just a holiday guest.

The shared menu: Season 1, 10 ebooks, $39 instead of $70.
