By one popular estimate, young children ask dozens of questions an hour. By high school, in most classrooms, it's nearly none per day. Somewhere in between, we teach kids that questions are annoying — usually by being visibly tired of them.

A quest made entirely of questions
Episode 3, The Question Quest, sends the Zumblies through a nighttime Zumbleton lit by floating question marks. Brainy takes notes, Sparklo investigates with a magnifying glass — and the subtitle carries the whole philosophy: a story about curiosity, different perspectives, and finding truth together.
Note that last part. The quest isn't "who's right." Each Zumblie sees the mystery differently — the inventor sees a mechanism, the artist sees a pattern, the gardener sees nature — and the truth only appears when the perspectives combine. That's not just curiosity; that's epistemics for preschoolers: how do we figure out what's true? Together, by asking.
How parents accidentally switch curiosity off
- Answering too fast. An instant answer ends the thinking. Try "ooh — what do YOU think?" first.
- "Because I said so." Sometimes necessary. As a habit, it teaches that questions hit walls.
- Mocking the weird ones. "Why doesn't the moon fall down?" is a genuinely great question. Physicists needed Newton for it.
How to switch it on
- Keep a Question Jar. Unanswerable ones go in the jar; pick one at dinner and wonder together. Not knowing is the fun part.
- Say "I don't know — let's find out" weekly. A parent who visibly enjoys not-knowing raises a child unafraid of it.
- Reward the question, not just the answer. "That's a Brainy-level question" lands better than any sticker.
The bigger picture
Curiosity predicts learning outcomes about as well as intelligence does — and unlike IQ, it's trainable, mostly by not crushing it. A bedtime story that celebrates asking is ten minutes of training a night.
