Montessori philosophy is built on a child directing their own learning, at their own pace, through hands-on materials rather than direct instruction. Applied to academics, this is well understood — the American Montessori Society has extensive resources on how child-led work periods build independence. Applied to emotional development, it's less commonly discussed, but the same principle holds.
Direct instruction ("calm down" as a command) vs. self-directed recognition (a tool the child chooses to use). A Montessori classroom doesn't tell a child what a triangle is — it gives them a triangle to handle until they understand it themselves. The same logic applies to emotions: telling a child "you're feeling frustrated" is direct instruction. Giving a child a way to recognize and name that state themselves — through a character, a color, a repeatable story — is self-directed, and it's the version that actually transfers to real moments, because the child did the identifying, not the adult. NAEYC publishes general guidance on self-directed, developmentally appropriate early-childhood practices along these same lines.
Three Montessori-aligned activities:
1. The naming shelf. Instead of a feelings chart on the wall (passive), give a child small objects or cards representing different emotional states they can pick up and hand to you. Physical selection, not passive labeling.
2. Story as material. Montessori materials are meant to be revisited independently. A short illustrated story a child can "read" (even pre-literacy, through pictures) again and again on their own terms functions the same way — repetition without adult prompting.
3. Practical life tie-in. Connect an emotional state to a small, real task the child can complete independently — Whisper's quiet leaf-folding moment, for instance — giving the nervous system something concrete to do rather than just a feeling to sit with.
