My Child Is Afraid of the Dark: How One Bedtime Story Can Change Everything

Fear of the dark is one of the most common childhood fears, typically peaking between ages 3 and 6 β€” right when imagination explodes but the ability to separate imagination from reality hasn't caught up yet. The same brain that invents dragons at 3 pm invents them under the bed at 8 pm.

You can't argue a child out of this fear. But you can re-decorate the dark.

The reframe: darkness isn't empty β€” it's glowing

The problem with the dark, from a child's point of view, is that it's a blank canvas and their imagination paints it with monsters. The fix isn't to insist the canvas is empty. It's to paint it with something better first.

That's the entire idea behind Episode 9 of the Zumblies, The Night Light Forest: a nighttime world that is beautiful because it's dark β€” glowing lanterns, soft blue light, gentle friends who love the nighttime. After a few reads, "dark" stops meaning "unknown" and starts meaning "that's when the forest glows."

A 4-step bedtime routine for a child afraid of the dark

  1. Dim gradually, not suddenly. Lower the lights during the story, not after it. The child associates growing darkness with the cozy story, not with being left alone.
  2. Read a story where nighttime is the good part. Avoid stories where darkness is where the villain lives β€” that's most of them. Choose ones where night is magical.
  3. Give the dark a friendly job. After the story: "The dark is how the stars turn on." Kids accept jobs. Everything in their world has a job.
  4. Keep a small warm light, guilt-free. A night light doesn't "reinforce the fear" β€” it's a bridge. Most kids outgrow it naturally.

What NOT to do

  • Don't check under the bed "to prove" nothing's there. To a child, checking confirms that under-the-bed is a place where things could be.
  • Don't tease or compare ("your little sister isn't scared"). Fear plus shame equals a bigger fear that hides.
  • Don't end the night with screens. Bright screens right before lights-out make the contrast with darkness harsher.

The story that makes the dark glow

The Night Light Forest was written specifically to be the "re-decorate the dark" story β€” soft rhythms, glowing illustrations, and an ending where the Zumblies fall asleep happily in the nighttime forest.
