The positive-discipline-vs-punishment debate usually gets flattened into "strict parents vs. permissive parents." That's not the actual distinction, and framing it that way makes it hard to apply either approach well.
The real distinction is about what changes behavior long-term: fear of consequence, or understanding of impact.Punishment relies on a child avoiding a behavior because something unpleasant follows it. This works short-term and tends to fade once the threat of consequence is removed — because the child never built internal understanding of why the behavior was a problem, only that it led to something bad.
Positive discipline aims at the internal version: a child who stops hitting not because a timer starts but because they understand what hitting does to someone else and have a different tool for the feeling that led to it in the first place. This is where most positive-discipline advice quietly fails: it correctly says "help the child understand the impact of their behavior" and then gives no concrete way to do that with a 3-year-old whose language and empathy are both still developing. Understanding requires a bridge — usually a story, a character, or a concrete comparison — not an abstract conversation about feelings.
A practical bridge: instead of explaining impact directly ("that hurt your sister's feelings"), use a story where a character does something similar and sees the result play out. Kids under 6 process consequences they watch far more reliably than consequences that are described to them.
The version that actually works day to day: hold the boundary firmly (this isn't optional, and it isn't punishment), then use story-based debriefs to build the internal understanding punishment alone never reaches.
