A good series is the single highest-leverage purchase in children's books: one character connection converts into ten, twenty, fifty willing bedtimes. A bad series is ten variations of the same thin story. Here's the checklist we'd use as parents — and yes, we build our own series to it, so judge us by it too.
The 5-point series checklist
1. An ensemble, not a solo act. One hero teaches kids one personality. Seven distinct friends — the inventor, the thinker, the jokester, the artist, the heart, the quiet one, the speedster — give every child in your house someone to imprint on, and give stories room for friendship, conflict, and teamwork. Ensembles age better.
2. Real themes under the fun. By five, kids need stories about what's actually happening to them: fights with friends, public failures, big feelings, being different. A great series smuggles those in under adventures. Check the back covers: if ten books have ten distinct themes (feelings, boundaries, conflict, failure, diversity...), that's design. If it's "fun romp" ten times, that's padding.
3. Consistent structure, calm endings. Same arc every book (problem → friends → resolution → settle) sounds repetitive to adults; to children it's the comfort that makes a series bedtime-safe. Endings should land soft, not on a cliffhanger — literacy resources like Reading Rockets note that predictable structures are also what let young kids practice prediction, a core comprehension skill.
4. Read-aloud length: 5–8 minutes. Longer books get abandoned mid-way; a series you finish nightly is a series that gets finished, period.
5. Honest per-book math. Series pricing varies wildly: $10–18 per paperback vs. $4–7 per ebook. For high-repetition, high-destruction readers (i.e., all of them), digital series math is hard to argue with.
