2. Ask what they're noticing, not what they're worried about. "What are you thinking about?" invites the process to continue. "What are you worried about?" can accidentally introduce a worry that wasn't fully formed yet.
3. Let a character do the "thinking out loud" for them. A cautious child often relates strongly to a character who visibly works through a decision on the page — it externalizes their own internal process and makes it feel normal rather than isolating.
