Every strategy list of books for preschoolers to learn to read should include one line item that isn't a purchase: the weekly library storytime. It looks like free entertainment. It's quietly a pre-reading program — and it does three things the home lap-read can't.
What storytime adds to the home program
Group listening practice. Home reading is one-on-one, responsive, pause-anytime. Storytime is a preview of circle time: sitting among other kids, tracking a reader who won't stop for you, sustaining attention in a distraction field.
