Some preschoolers do their best learning at a dead run — and the standard picture of pre-reading (child still, lap, book) simply doesn't match them. Good news: almost every foundation that books for preschoolers to learn to read build can be trained in motion. The movement methods:
Sound play at full speed
Phonological awareness — the ear-skill under all later decoding — doesn't require a chair. Run it kinetically: rhyme tag ("you're safe if you say a word that rhymes with CAT!"), the stomp-the-syllables game (Kin-dra = two stomps, Spar-klo = two, ba-na-na = three), sound scavenger hunts ("find three things that start with B — GO!"). The mover's body becomes the answer sheet, and the sound analysis runs identically. Letters you can climb on
Letter knowledge goes physical too: letters drawn giant in sidewalk chalk and walked, traced in sand and shaving cream, built from the child's own body ("make a T!"), hunted at a run around the house ("touch three S's — GO!"). The gross-motor letter beats the worksheet letter for this kid every time — bigger muscles, deeper file.
The story stays — the format flexes
The read-aloud itself survives with the standard mover accommodations: the orbiting listener (they circle, they're listening — check by asking what happened), the acting role (they perform the story as you read: zoom when Dash zooms, flop when Giggles flops), and the strategic low-battery slots (meals, bath's edge, buckled in the car) for the longer sits. The story input matters too much to surrender to the wiggle; it just arrives via a moving target.
The reassurance
The runner at four is very often the reader at eight — temperament and literacy are separate tracks. Your job isn't to manufacture stillness; it's to deliver the foundations in whatever format this particular body accepts.
