Here's what most "STEM for kids" gets wrong: it teaches science as a pile of facts. But scientists aren't people who know facts. They're people who run the loop β build it, break it, figure out why, build it better. That loop is a temperament, and temperaments are set young.
A robot who fails like a real engineer
Sparklo, the inventor of the Zumblies, is a walking STEM curriculum with goggles. You're using light refraction principles!" Then the machine explodes.

What real STEM parenting looks like (hint: it's cheap)
- Ask the Brainy question. When their tower falls: not "want help?" but "what did you learn from what happened?"Verbatim. It's the best question in engineering.
- Keep a junk drawer they're allowed to raid. Boxes, tubes, tape. Inventors need materials, not kits.
- Celebrate version 2. Frame the rebuild, not just the build. "This one has a wider base β good engineering" is worth ten "wow amazing!"s.
Real refraction, real fast
After the story, make Sparklo's machine work: glass of water on a sunny windowsill, white paper behind it β rainbow. Your kid just replicated the experiment their book character botched. That feeling has a name: science.
